As a board-certified, fellowship-trained and internationally acclaimed spine surgeon, Dr. Michael Janssen, was among the first surgeons in the nation to perform and perfect total disc replacement (TDR) surgery. He was the lead investigator in the initial clinical studies and has performed more than 1,000 TDR surgeries since the FDA approved the ProDisc in 2006. Additionally, he has trained more than 150 spine surgeons worldwide in TDR surgery.

Dr. Janssen founded the Center for Spinal Disorders (now the Center for Spine and Orthopedics) and the Scientific Education and Research Institute in Thornton, CO. He has participated in 14 clinical research studies, including 7 as the principal investigator. In 2018, he was the principal investigator for the Simplify Disc Trial (one and two levels) and is currently participating in the PC – 1006 Aspire Trial.

As an industry expert, Dr. Janssen has published 58 research papers in a wide range of prestigious scientific journals and lectured at more than 200 domestic and international conferences. In 2015, he was awarded the Inaugural German Ochoa Traveling Fellowship Award by AOSpine.

Dr. Janssen specializes in total disc replacement in the cervical and lumbar spine, spinal fusion, degenerative disc surgery, disc arthroplasty, laminectomy, microdisectomy and minimally invasive spine surgery, among other procedures.

Dr. Janssen’s training includes two spine fellowships, one at the Lakewood Orthopedic Clinic and another at the Klinik for Orthopedic Chirurgie in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Previously, he completed a residency in orthopedic surgery and an internship in general surgery at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He earned his Doctor of Osteopath Medicine Degree from the University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, MO. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Board of Spine Surgeons.
